In 16th century, rich chocolate, served hot and sweetened became one of Spain best-kept gastronomic secrets. In 1777 the first chocolate factory opened in Barcelona selling it in tablets, carved into ounces.

Spanish Hot Drinking Chocolate
The most characteristic drink of Spain’s Golden Age – (from the 16-17C), chocolate was drunk in all private houses. Spanish like thick hot chocolate for breakfast – traditionally served with churros (delicious crisp golden fritters).
1830 – Gatherings From Spain – Richard Ford records experiences during a 3-year stay in the country from 1830. According to Ford, chocolate is to the Spanish what tea is to the English and coffee to the French. It is found nearly everywhere and is always excellent.
